BayernLB settles €100m tokenised commercial paper in central bank money via Pontes

Key points

  • BayernLB issued a €100 million tokenised commercial paper on the SWIAT blockchain on 27 October 2026, settled in central bank money via the Eurosystem's Pontes platform.
  • Settlement was achieved in minutes rather than the minimum one-day lag typical of traditional commercial paper trading and settlement, according to BayernLB CFO André Haag.
  • Central bank money settlement was used, removing private-token credit exposure from the transaction.
  • The Banque de France and Euroclear are separately developing Project Pythagore to apply Pontes to settlement of tokenised NEU commercial paper (NEU CP) in central bank money.
  • Two live or near-live use cases on Pontes within a short window suggest the Eurosystem's wholesale tokenised settlement infrastructure is moving beyond single-institution pilots toward multi-participant adoption.

Bayerische Landesbank (BayernLB) has issued a €100 million tokenised commercial paper on the SWIAT blockchain, with settlement completed in central bank money through the Eurosystem’s Pontes platform. The transaction collapses what has traditionally been at least a one-day gap between trading and settlement into a matter of minutes, according to BayernLB’s CFO André Haag, who described the outcome as a genuine milestone for short-term refinancing.

The operational significance sits in the asset class. Commercial paper is already a high-velocity, maturity-sensitive instrument where overnight delays carry real funding cost; compressing settlement to near-real-time changes the economics of short-term liquidity management in a measurable way. Central bank money settlement removes the credit exposure that private settlement tokens introduce, which has been a persistent structural objection to tokenised fixed-income transactions at scale.

The Pontes platform is attracting parallel activity elsewhere in the euro area. The Banque de France and Euroclear are developing Project Pythagore to use the same infrastructure for settlement of tokenised NEU commercial paper (NEU CP) in central bank money, suggesting Pontes is consolidating as the Eurosystem’s preferred on-ramp for wholesale tokenised settlement rather than remaining a one-off experiment.
