Bank of Korea prepares live CBDC transactions with 9 banks in September

  • The Bank of Korea confirmed on 20 July 2026 that the second phase of its CBDC pilot moves to real-transaction testing in September with 9 banks, including KB Kookmin, Shinhan, Hana, and Woori, issuing deposit tokens on central bank infrastructure with commercialisation as the stated goal.
  • Korea's ruling Democratic Party committed on 20 July 2026 to reintroducing the won-stablecoin bill in September with fortnightly subcommittee reviews, with the bank-consortium 51 per cent rule as the stall point and the US GENIUS Act's January 2027 implementation as the explicit competitive pressure.
  • Mubadala Capital tokenised one of its evergreen private markets strategies via KAIO across Base, Solana, and Sui, drawing roughly $75 million onchain as of 23 July 2026, with Coinbase taking exposure on its own corporate balance sheet.
