Robinhood to offer Ripple's RLUSD to 28.6 million customers despite USDG ties
Key points
- Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin is expected to become available through the Robinhood app before the end of 2026, with potential reach to the platform's 28.6 million funded customers.
- Robinhood helped establish the Global Dollar Network in 2024 to promote Paxos's competing USDG stablecoin, which is already the default lending asset for Robinhood Earn; no changes to that agreement have been announced.
- The partnership includes Bitstamp settling transactions in RLUSD on the XRP Ledger and Robinhood adopting Ripple's treasury software for cash management, payments, and forecasting.
- Ripple Prime already supplies Bitstamp with lending and margin financing across approximately 20 digital assets, with perpetual futures trading planned as an addition later this year.
- RLUSD launched in December 2024 and has grown to a market capitalisation exceeding $2.5 billion, while also receiving OCC approval for the Ripple National Trust Bank on the day of this announcement.
Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin is expected to arrive in the Robinhood app before the end of 2026, giving the dollar-backed token access to a retail brokerage platform with 28.6 million funded accounts. The arrangement extends an existing relationship: RLUSD is already live on Robinhood Chain and on Bitstamp, the crypto exchange Robinhood acquired for $200 million in June.
The partnership puts Robinhood in a genuinely ambiguous position. The brokerage helped found the Global Dollar Network in 2024, a consortium that promotes Paxos’s USDG stablecoin and distributes revenue among members including Kraken, Galaxy Digital, Anchorage Digital, and Bullish. USDG was named the default lending asset for Robinhood Earn, the firm’s onchain lending product, as recently as July. Robinhood has announced no changes to that arrangement, and neither company has clarified whether RLUSD will sit alongside USDG in the same product lines or occupy distinct ones.
Beyond retail distribution, the deal carries institutional weight. Bitstamp will settle transactions using RLUSD on the XRP Ledger, and Robinhood intends to adopt Ripple’s treasury software for cash management, payments, and forecasting. Ripple Prime already provides Bitstamp with lending and margin financing across roughly 20 digital assets, and the two firms plan to extend that relationship to cover perpetual futures trading later this year. RLUSD, launched in December 2024, has reached a market capitalisation of more than $2.5 billion.
The episode suggests that stablecoin consortium membership does not function as exclusivity, at least not in practice. Whether other Global Dollar Network members draw the same conclusion, and how Robinhood ultimately positions two competing stablecoins within a single product surface, are the questions worth watching as the rollout approaches.
