MUFG Prepares Canton Network Proof-of-Concept for JGB Repo Settlement

Key points

  • MUFG is preparing a proof-of-concept for onchain JGB repo settlement using the Canton network, with the aim of enabling real-time, 24/7 settlement.
  • Traditional JGB settlement takes one to three days; the proof-of-concept targets reducing that window to improve operational and capital efficiency for repo transactions.
  • JPMorgan's Kinexys network, live since 2020, is cited as an existing precedent for intraday blockchain-based repo settlement using US Treasury bonds.
  • MUFG is separately collaborating with SMBC and Mizuho to explore issuing a jointly issued stablecoin, with a target listing by March 2027.
  • MUFG describes growing global and domestic momentum to bring JGBs onchain, pointing to their widespread use as repo collateral by participants in Japan and abroad.

Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) is building a proof-of-concept to settle Japanese government bond (JGB) transactions on the Canton network, targeting real-time, around-the-clock settlement for repo trades. Conventional JGB settlement currently takes one to three days; the bank expects compressing that window to improve both operational efficiency and capital utilisation across repo transactions, where JGBs function as collateral.

The initiative situates Japan within a broader pattern of sovereign-bond tokenisation that has advanced further in other jurisdictions. JPMorgan‘s Kinexys network, which went live in 2020, has provided intraday blockchain-based repo settlement for US Treasury bonds for several years, and MUFG has pointed to comparable proof-of-concept expansions across Europe and the United States as context for its own move. The bank’s statement notes growing momentum among both domestic and overseas market participants to bring JGBs onchain, given the instruments’ liquidity and credit quality.

This JGB project sits alongside a separate but related MUFG initiative: a collaboration with Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMBC) and Mizuho Financial Group to explore a jointly issued stablecoin, with a target listing date of March 2027. Together, the two tracks suggest MUFG is building out interlocking blockchain capabilities across settlement infrastructure and digital cash, rather than treating tokenisation as a discrete experiment.
