What it is
MUTB is the trust-banking arm inside MUFG’s consolidated supervisory perimeter, with no separate digital-asset legal entity, since Japan’s PSA trust-route stablecoin model runs through MUTB’s existing trust-licence authority rather than a bespoke crypto licence. MUTB was a named participant, alongside MUFG, Mizuho, SMBC and Progmat, in a joint megabank stablecoin and cross-border payments proof-of-concept announced November 2025 under the FSA FinTech PoC Hub, tested with Mitsubishi Corporation’s Japanese and overseas offices (Stablecoin Insider).
Relevance to tokenisation
MUTB is the counterparty that makes Japan’s trust-route stablecoin design bankruptcy-remote from the underlying commercial bank, so a holder’s claim runs against the trust structure MUTB administers, not against MUFG’s own corporate credit in the same direct way a bank-direct stablecoin would. See MUFG and Progmat for the fuller architecture this trust function sits inside.
