Matter Labs open-sources Prividium core as Bundesbank runs self-hosted pilot
Key points
- Matter Labs has open-sourced the access-control and role-governance core of Prividium, enabling institutions to run a permissioned chain entirely from public code without a commercial agreement.
- The Deutsche Bundesbank is the first named institution to deploy Prividium in a self-hosted configuration, with smart contract and token data held inside the central bank's own environment.
- Matter Labs and the Bundesbank are collaborating on design and testing; the Bundesbank has not commented and the test's purpose has not been disclosed.
- Paid products retained by Matter Labs include the administration console, user access tooling, and connectors such as the core banking integration used by Cari Network for tokenised deposits.
- Deutsche Bank's DAMA 2 tokenised fund project and a UBS digital gold proof of concept previously used ZKsync, providing existing institutional familiarity with the underlying stack.
Matter Labs, the developer behind ZKsync, has released the core of its Prividium privacy blockchain platform under an open-source licence, allowing financial institutions to run permissioned chains from public code without a commercial agreement. The Deutsche Bundesbank is named as the first institution to deploy the platform in its own infrastructure, running a self-hosted instance in which smart contract and token data remain inside the central bank’s environment. Matter Labs says the two organisations are collaborating on design and testing, though the Bundesbank has not commented publicly and the purpose of the deployment has not been disclosed.
The open-sourced component governs roles and access rights on a Prividium chain, controlling who can read from and write to the ledger. Matter Labs retains paid products around the administration console, user access tooling, and connectors, including core banking integration. What Prividium sends off-chain is not transaction data but a cryptographic proof that the ledger updated correctly, which is recorded on Ethereum or another compatible chain, a structure that keeps sensitive financial data inside the institution while anchoring integrity externally.
The commercial signals in the existing user base are worth tracking. Deutsche Bank’s DAMA 2 tokenised fund project and a UBS proof of concept for a digital gold product both made use of ZKsync, and Cari Network has adopted Prividium specifically for tokenised deposits, where the core banking connector is the operative piece. Chief executive Alex Gluchowski framed the open-source release as a starting point rather than an end state, flagging interoperability between institution-run chains and between those chains and public markets as the harder problem still to be solved.
