Kinexys, S&P Global, EcoRegistry and International Carbon Registry Pilot Blockchain for Voluntary Carbon Markets

J.P. Morgan‘s Kinexys blockchain unit has launched a pilot with S&P Global Commodity Insights, EcoRegistry and the International Carbon Registry to explore blockchain applications in voluntary carbon markets. The participants are positioning the technology as a potential answer to trust and efficiency challenges in VCM infrastructure, though no product timeline or technical architecture has been disclosed.

The involvement of two carbon registries alongside a price discovery platform suggests the pilot is testing interoperability between primary issuance, verification data and secondary settlement. If the group moves beyond proof of concept, the question becomes whether tokenised carbon credits can clear faster and with lower counterparty friction than existing registry workflows, and whether institutional allocators will treat on-chain credits as fungible with off-chain inventories for compliance or net-zero accounting purposes.
