JPMorgan Plans to Bring JPM Coin to Ethereum for Institutional Clients
Key points
- JPMorgan plans to deploy JPM Coin, its dollar deposit token, on the Ethereum public blockchain for institutional clients, according to a Bloomberg report.
- Emma Landriault, head of Kinexys Labs, cited Ethereum's greater liquidity relative to rival networks and its existing institutional user base as the deciding factors.
- No launch date has been announced; JPMorgan had not responded to a request for comment from CoinDesk by the time of publication.
- JPMorgan's private Kinexys network already processes more than $7 billion in daily transactions, a fraction of the bank's $12 trillion daily payments volume.
- The move extends JPM Coin's reach beyond Base and follows a January signal that the bank intended to expand to the Canton Network, suggesting a multi-chain distribution strategy is taking shape.
JPMorgan is planning to make JPM Coin, its dollar deposit token, available to institutional clients on the Ethereum public blockchain, extending its blockchain reach beyond its private Kinexys network. The bank cited Ethereum’s liquidity depth and its existing adoption by institutional counterparties as the primary reasons for the choice, with Emma Landriault, head of Kinexys Labs, making that case directly to Bloomberg. No launch date has been disclosed.
The strategic logic is straightforward: JPM Coin currently lives on Kinexys, a private network processing more than $7 billion in daily transactions, and on Base, the Coinbase-built layer-2 blockchain. Moving to Ethereum widens the addressable base to crypto firms seeking blockchain payment rails and to financial institutions that need a digital dollar token to settle trades or support tokenised assets. JPMorgan had signalled an expansion beyond Base as far back as January, when it flagged the Canton Network as a target.
The context matters. Ethereum holds nearly $50 billion in locked assets across decentralised applications, according to DeFiLlama, making it materially larger than competing public networks as a settlement venue. At the same time, JPMorgan is one of more than 30 banks helping Swift define governance for its own blockchain-based ledger, though it was not among the 17 banks preparing to pilot live transactions on that system as of July. Domestically, JPMorgan is also part of a broader group of US banks, including Citi, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo, with plans for a shared tokenised deposit network. The Ethereum move sits alongside, rather than replacing, those parallel tracks.
