HSBC launches RedCoin stablecoin to 3.3 million PayMe users in Hong Kong

Key points

  • HSBC launched RedCoin (RCHKD), a Hong Kong dollar stablecoin, on its PayMe app, accessible to more than 3.3 million users from October 2026.
  • RedCoin can be used for peer-to-peer transfers and payments at over 100,000 merchants, with the bank stating the token is fully backed by high-quality liquid assets in separate accounts.
  • HSBC and Anchorpoint Financial (Standard Chartered-led) both received Hong Kong's first stablecoin issuer licences from the HKMA in April 2026.
  • HSBC plans to add RedCoin to its main Hong Kong mobile banking app later in 2026 and will allow customers to subscribe to tokenised investment products, including a Hong Kong dollar money market fund share class, using the token.
  • John O'Neill, HSBC's managing director for digital assets and currencies, confirmed that wholesale corporate and institutional use cases are also planned for RedCoin.

HSBC has introduced RedCoin (RCHKD), a Hong Kong dollar-denominated stablecoin, directly into its PayMe payments app, giving more than 3.3 million existing users the ability to activate a stablecoin wallet and spend at over 100,000 merchants. The bank describes the token as fully backed by high-quality liquid assets held in segregated accounts.

The launch follows the Hong Kong Monetary Authority‘s April decision to award its first stablecoin issuer licences, granted to both HSBC and Anchorpoint Financial, a venture led by Standard Chartered. Anchorpoint began a limited rollout of its own HKDAP token in August, targeting institutional payments and settlement, whereas HSBC has moved directly into a retail-facing consumer app.

The bank’s stated roadmap extends RedCoin beyond peer-to-peer and merchant payments. Later this year it intends to bring the token into its broader Hong Kong mobile banking app, and it plans to allow customers to subscribe to tokenised investment products using RedCoin, including a new share class of its existing Hong Kong dollar money market fund. John O’Neill, HSBC’s managing director for digital assets and currencies, indicated that wholesale corporate and institutional use cases are also in scope.

The sequencing matters for the wider market. A tier-one retail bank embedding a stablecoin inside an app users already habitually open compresses the adoption barrier to near zero; the investment-product link, once live, would make RedCoin one of the first consumer stablecoins with a direct on-ramp to tokenised funds at scale.
