HKMA Ensemble TX Adds 24/7 Tokenised Central Bank Money and Expands to 12 Banks

Key points

  • Ensemble TX has replaced RTGS-only interbank settlement with tokenised central bank money available 24/7, removing operating-hour constraints from the settlement leg of tokenised deposit transactions.
  • Participating banks in the HKMA pilot have grown from seven to twelve, while pioneer users have expanded from thirteen to twenty.
  • Primary use cases are corporate treasury payments via tokenised deposits and investment into tokenised money market funds.
  • Hong Kong launched regulated trading of tokenised MMFs through a local crypto exchange the week before this update, enabling continuous subscription and redemption for corporates.
  • Other central banks developing similar rails include the Swiss National Bank and Europe's Pontes project, though Pontes cash tokens are still at the minimal viable product phase.

Hong Kong’s Ensemble TX tokenised deposit pilot has upgraded its interbank settlement infrastructure, replacing reliance on the Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) system with a tokenised central bank money channel that operates around the clock. Because tokenised deposits represent the liabilities of individual banks, every token payment between participants requires a corresponding interbank settlement leg; that leg can now be settled in tokenised form without being constrained by RTGS operating hours.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has simultaneously broadened the programme’s reach, growing the number of participating banks from seven to twelve and expanding the cohort of “pioneer” users from thirteen to twenty. Corporate treasury payments using tokenised deposits have been the dominant use case, alongside investment in tokenised money market funds (MMFs). The timing is notable: Hong Kong separately launched regulated trading of tokenised MMFs via a local crypto exchange just the week prior, meaning corporates can now move capital into and out of tokenised funds without being bound by subscription and redemption windows.

For operators watching wholesale central bank digital currency (CBDC) infrastructure mature globally, Ensemble TX now sits alongside the Swiss National Bank and Europe’s Pontes initiative as live or near-live examples of tokenised central bank settlement rails. Pontes cash tokens remain at a minimal viable product stage, which makes Hong Kong’s round-the-clock availability a meaningfully more advanced operational posture at this point.
