Federated Hermes and Prometheum target retail brokerage accounts with tokenised MMFs

Key points

  • Federated Hermes ($912 billion AUM) and Prometheum have announced a partnership to distribute tokenised MMFs through mainstream broker-dealers and investment advisers in the US.
  • The first tokenised MMF through this channel is targeted for launch in the first quarter of 2027.
  • Unlike Federated's existing tokenised fund arrangements, where third parties create the token wrapper, this partnership involves issuing 'digital securities' directly, suggesting on-chain native issuance by Federated itself.
  • The product targets retail brokerage accounts rather than crypto platforms or institutional-only venues, a distribution angle that remains rare in the tokenised fund market.
  • The idle-cash sweep use case puts the product in direct competition with broker-dealer cash management revenues, a structural tension that will shape distribution uptake.

Federated Hermes, the US asset manager with $912 billion under management, has struck a distribution partnership with Prometheum to bring tokenised money market funds (MMFs) into conventional broker-dealer and registered investment adviser channels. A first product is expected in the first quarter of 2027, making this one of the few tokenised fund efforts explicitly aimed at the brokerage accounts where most American retail investors hold their savings rather than at crypto-native platforms or large institutional custodians.

The structural ambition here is a departure from prevailing tokenisation models. Where Federated’s existing tokenised exposure relies on third parties to mint or mirror fund shares as tokens, the Prometheum partnership is framed around issuing “digital securities” directly, implying Federated itself will place the shares on-chain. That on-chain issuance angle matters operationally: it signals a shift from wrapper-based tokenisation toward a native digital security structure, with the attendant questions around transfer agent obligations, broker-dealer custody rules, and secondary market mechanics in a regulated US broker context.

The commercial logic is plausible but carries a known friction point. The natural use case for a tokenised MMF inside a brokerage account is sweeping idle cash into a yield-bearing instrument, yet that function is already one of the most profitable line items for broker-dealers, who earn spread on uninvested client cash. How distribution partners price and position the product against their own cash-management revenues will be a material variable to watch as the Q1 2027 target approaches. Federated’s appointment of Kevin Barr, who spent more than fourteen years at BNY leading digital cash before joining in May, suggests the firm is treating the plumbing as seriously as the product design.
