Deutsche Bank Secures MiCA Licence, Plans Asia Crypto Custody Expansion by 2027

Key points

  • BaFin authorised Deutsche Bank under MiCA rules on 12 October, with a German launch expected within weeks, subject to regulatory approval.
  • The initial custody service will support bitcoin, ether, USDC, EURC, and EURAU, with Deutsche Bank managing private keys on behalf of clients.
  • An Asia expansion is targeted for 2027, though the bank has not specified which Asian markets it will enter first.
  • Additional planned capabilities include stablecoin conversion, tokenised deposits, and digital bond issuance.
  • Deutsche Bank has partnered with Bitpanda and Taurus on its custody infrastructure and cites an approximately 8% compound annual revenue growth target for the corporate bank through 2028.

Deutsche Bank is preparing to launch a crypto custody service in Germany within weeks, following authorisation from BaFin under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework on 12 October. The bank’s corporate bank co-head told Reuters that an Asian rollout is planned for 2027, making it one of the more substantial cross-regional custody pushes by a global systemically important bank.

At launch, the service will cover bitcoin, ether, and three stablecoins: USDC, EURC, and EURAU. Deutsche Bank will manage clients’ wallets and private keys directly, removing the operational burden from corporate and institutional counterparties who would otherwise need proprietary infrastructure. Beyond custody, the bank is developing stablecoin conversion, tokenised deposits, and digital bond issuance capabilities. Deutsche Bank has worked with Bitpanda and Taurus on the custody build.

The Asia expansion sits within a broader financial target: roughly 8% compound annual revenue growth in the corporate bank from 2025 to 2028. Which Asian markets will be prioritised first is not yet specified. Deutsche Bank joins Standard Chartered and BBVA among global banks already offering or developing crypto custody, suggesting institutional-grade custody is becoming a competitive baseline rather than a differentiator.
