BNY and Galaxy to Integrate Staking Into Institutional Digital Asset Custody

Key points

  • BNY and Galaxy have announced a strategic collaboration to bring staking support onto BNY's Digital Asset Custody platform, with the combined offering subject to regulatory review.
  • Galaxy is also acting as a design partner on broader BNY digital asset platform infrastructure, extending the relationship beyond staking alone.
  • Eligible institutional clients will access staking within BNY's existing servicing model, which integrates custody, fund accounting, tax reporting, payments, and client reporting.
  • BNY oversees $62.6 trillion in assets under custody and/or administration as of 30 June 2026, giving the platform's architecture decisions outsized market-structure significance.
  • Galaxy was already a client of BNY's Digital Asset Custody platform before this collaboration, suggesting the design-partner role grew from an operational relationship rather than a standing start.

BNY has announced a strategic collaboration with Galaxy to embed staking capabilities directly into BNY’s Digital Asset Custody platform, marking the first time the custodian will offer staking and custody within a single institutional servicing model. Galaxy, described in the announcement as an existing client of BNY’s custody platform, will also act as a design partner on broader platform infrastructure development. The offering remains subject to regulatory review.

The commercial logic is straightforward: institutional clients holding proof-of-stake assets have historically faced friction in separating custody from staking operations, often requiring separate counterparties or workflows. Combining both inside BNY’s model, which already integrates fund accounting, tax reporting, payments, and client reporting, removes that operational seam. Galaxy contributes proof-of-stake network expertise; BNY contributes the governance, controls, and systemic credibility that large allocators require.

The design-partner arrangement is the detail worth watching beyond staking alone. Galaxy shaping BNY’s underlying platform infrastructure suggests influence over how future digital asset services, potentially including tokenised fund rails or onchain settlement, are architected at one of the world’s largest custodians. BNY oversees $62.6 trillion in assets under custody and/or administration as of 30 June 2026, meaning even incremental shifts in its platform architecture carry significant downstream implications for institutional market structure.
