Bank Indonesia, HKMA and PBOC Sign MoU on Rupiah-Renminbi Bilateral Transactions

Key points

  • Bank Indonesia, the HKMA and the People's Bank of China signed a memorandum of understanding on 11 June 2026 to promote bilateral rupiah and offshore renminbi transactions between Indonesia and Hong Kong.
  • The arrangement routes rupiah-renminbi flows through Hong Kong's offshore renminbi infrastructure; settlement mechanics remain undisclosed.
  • The MoU deepens Hong Kong's role as a hub for non-dollar Asian currency pairs, potentially lowering conversion friction on Indonesia exposures.
  • Given HKMA and PBOC involvement in wholesale digital currency trials, the structure may presage further coordination on cross-border tokenised settlement rails.

Bank Indonesia, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, and the People’s Bank of China have signed a memorandum of understanding to promote bilateral transactions in Indonesian rupiah and offshore Chinese renminbi between Indonesia and Hong Kong. The agreement was formalised on 11 June 2026.

The trilateral arrangement targets operational facilitation of rupiah-renminbi flows through Hong Kong’s offshore renminbi infrastructure, expanding the currency pairing available to corporates and asset managers operating across the two jurisdictions. Mechanics and settlement specifics remain undisclosed in the public notice.

For treasury desks, this frames Hong Kong as a deepening hub for non-dollar Asian currency pairs, potentially lowering conversion friction and improving pricing on Indonesia exposures. The structure may also presage further central bank coordination on cross-border tokenised settlement rails, given both HKMA and PBOC involvement in wholesale digital currency trials.
