Apollo Economist Warns AI Agents Could Trigger Slow-Motion Bank Run

Key points

  • Apollo Chief Economist Torsten Slok warned in a Sunday note that AI agents capable of autonomously moving household cash could slowly erode the cheap deposit base banks use to fund loans.
  • Slok identified neobanks and fintechs including Revolut, SoFi, Varo, LendingClub and Wealthfront as destinations paying 3.3% to 5% annually, compared with a 0.1% national average on checking accounts.
  • Coinbase's x402 protocol, now governed by the Linux Foundation, has reportedly processed 188 million to 205 million cumulative transactions with around 69,000 active agents, and counts Visa, Mastercard, Google, Cloudflare, AWS, Circle and Stripe among its foundation members.
  • Market estimates for agentic AI in financial services vary widely, from $7.78 billion in 2026 to $43.52 billion by 2031 according to Mordor Intelligence, and roughly $845 million for the narrower AI agents segment in 2025 per MarketsandMarkets.
  • Slok's note illustrates how agentic finance, where AI acts on balances rather than merely advising, could introduce systemic funding risk that regulators have not yet publicly addressed.

Apollo Global’s Chief Economist Torsten Slok has argued that AI assistants capable of autonomously managing household finances could gradually drain the cheap deposit base that banks depend on to fund lending. Writing in a note titled “Is an Agentic bank run coming?”, Slok singled out Meta’s personal agent Muse and similar tools as illustrations of technology that could sweep idle cash from checking accounts paying roughly 0.1% annually into higher-yield alternatives offering between 3.3% and 5%, with firms such as Revolut, SoFi, Varo, LendingClub and Wealthfront cited as the destination options.

The arithmetic is straightforward: a $10,000 balance earns around $10 per year in a standard checking account and roughly $100 at the higher-yield institutions Slok identifies. At scale, Slok contends, widespread adoption of agentic cash optimisation would erode the inexpensive funding that underpins credit creation across the financial system. Apollo manages approximately $1 trillion in assets, and Slok is among the more closely followed economists on Wall Street, lending the warning institutional weight beyond a theoretical exercise.

Crypto infrastructure is already being laid for precisely this kind of automated treasury activity. Coinbase‘s x402 protocol, described as the most widely used agentic payment standard, allows AI agents to settle payments in stablecoins within seconds and without human sign-off. The protocol has reportedly processed between 188 million and 205 million cumulative transactions, with around 69,000 active agents, and its governing foundation now includes Cloudflare, Google, Visa, Mastercard, AWS, Circle and Stripe under Linux Foundation governance. Market sizing for agentic AI in financial services ranges from Mordor Intelligence’s $7.78 billion estimate for 2026 to a narrower $845 million figure from MarketsandMarkets, with Mordor projecting the segment reaching $43.52 billion by 2031.
